In an effort to combat greenhouse gas emissions, Demilec, a top manufacturer
of spray foam, has announced at a White House environmental quality meeting
that HFCs will be phased out from its line of products.
On October 19, Demilec, one of the largest manufacturers of foam insulation
and polyuria products in North America, has officially announced that
they will be phasing out harmful hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) from its line
of products. Hydrofluoroolefin (HFO)-blown spray foam is now in development
as a more eco-friendly alternative to HFCs, and will be available for
use by the middle of next year.
Several of the world’s leading scientists agree that greenhouse gas
emissions are a large contributor to global warming. HFCs have been determined
to be 10,000 times worse for climate change than carbon, according to
findings by the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy.
In an effort to help reduce the impact our product has on our world, Demilec
has developed a safer and yet equally effective substitute for HFCs. A
complete transition to HFO-blown insulation is expected by 2017.
This decision is one of many that reflect Demilec’s commitment to
sustainability. This year alone, Demilec will recycle the equivalent of
35 million plastic bottles into its closed-cell products, which contain
more than 20 percent recycled, renewable content.
President and CEO Paul Valle announced to the Industry Leader Roundtable,
organized by The White House Council on Environmental Quality, that “the
move to hydrofluoroolefins marks an industry shift to curb greenhouse
gas emissions produced by hydrofluorocarbons.” He added, “As
leaders within our industries, it’s imperative that we look at the
big picture to identify ways that we can reduce our own impacts on the
environment, as well as help others do the same with the products we make.”
